Sci-Fi World (6 March)

On the 6th of March Malmö hosted the Scandinavian Sci-Fi, Game and Film Convention "Sci-Fi World."

The convention was hosted at Stadionmässan and hosted a stack of shops and stalls, a cosplay contest and some guest stars:

The Posts

The convention was 140kr a ticket to enter (about AU$30) and they only took cash, so while Kris visited the ATM the kids had fun with a poster at the shops:

Then it was Cameron and Alana's turn

It felt a bit odd withdrawing cash, everything in Sweden so far seemed to discourage cash, many of the banks didn't even hold or accept cash, dealing only in electronic funds.

When we entered we were a little disappointed.  There was a short corridor that had a comic stall, some artists who had done some awesome comic illustrations and a handful of computers for E-Sports but that seemed about it - not really worth the $150 it cost us to enter.  Then we realised that there was a whole other section around the corner from where we came in.

Around there were the guests - although you needed to pay to meet and have a photo taken with them.

There were quite a few stalls, some with comics, some offering games and DVDs and some selling game and movie themed toys.  There was a stall selling Nintendo 64 games and Super Nintendo games but they were upwards for $100 each and they didn't have any super exciting titles (sorry Daniel, I did check...)

The kids started by having a shot at "Blast a Trooper", they paid 10kr (about $1.50) to have three shots with a nerf gun at a cutouts of Storm Trooper masks.  It didnt seem like there were any prizes, but my kids were in little risk of winning anything as they earned their money by accidentally firing the darts way over the table, into the curtains and all over the floor.  I think they managed to get one hit each, but I'm sure at least one of those was a lucky ricochet.

Cam and Tom saw Kylo Ren from Starwars walking past and were desperate to get their photo taken with him.  They were too embarrassed to ask, but when I asked he was happy to pose with them.  Tom was so excited afterwards he skipped around for about 5 minutes.

Kristine wouldn't let me buy one of the awesome masks on the top shelf of this stall:

There were plenty of people in costumes but we missed out on the main parades and cosplay competitions, but we did catch the small Starwars Parade:

The kids also liked the Build-A-Droid group that made remote controlled versions of the Starwars droids:

The stall that caught my attention was the swords:

I made Kristine promise not to let me spend too much money on swords (I have a sword collection back in Australia), and she sort of kept that promise.  After I mentioned a few that I liked, she sent me off with the kids and then bought me a couple -

I got Hadhafang, which is Arwen's sword from Lord of the Rings and a dragon dagger:

After spending way too much on replica weaponry, we headed to the downstairs section where we bumped into one of the other expat families - Travis and Bek and their girls.  We stopped for a quick bite to eat and then explored the downstairs area including some cool exhibits:

In addition to some of the earlier photos, these exhibit photos are courtesy of Bek as mine turned out blurry :(

The melted skull from the end of Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark, Freddies Glove from Nightmare on Elm Street, EWING 3 licence plate from Dallas and a Storm Trooper Helmet from Star Wars - A New Hope

Overall it was a great day. We ended up heading home instead of watching the Q&A sessions because the kids were getting a bit tired, but Travis and Bek stayed to watch some of the shows, including a Lightsaber Training:
