Legoland - 19-Mar Part 1 - Travel and Legoland Overview

We made a rush decision to go to legoland this weekend.  Why? Because it was ridiculously cheap. Why? Because they had an Easter Special, a Sunday special and it was opening weekend.

The first numbers we'd looked at (for 2 nights accommodation and 2 days in legoland for the five of us) were looking at about 12,000kr (about AUD$2000) to stay in Legoland hotel (in the park) and about 9000kr (AUD$1500) to stay in the Lego Village - a lego themed campsite with cabins and rooms just outside the park.

Thanks to the savings we managed to get 2 nights in the Lego Pirate Inn (in Lego Village) on the opening weekend for  6000kr (AUD$1000) including dinners and breakfasts.

We left early on Saturday and headed across to Billund in Denmark where Legoland is.

From Malmö to Billund

This was deeper into Denmark than we had ever been - crossing the Oresund Bridge from Sweden in to Zealand (the west-most and biggest island of Denmark - containing Copenhagen) across the Storebælt bridge from Zealand to Funen and then over to Jutland the part of Denmark connected to Europe.

We didn't do a lot of stop-overs, as we wanted to get to Legoland  as close to opening time (10:00am) as possible.  We left at 8:30am for a 3hr drive and arrived at the Legoland Village at about 11:30am.

Of course, in order to get there we had to pass this place -
Middelfart

Middelfart sounds funny but it comes from Mæthælfar which essentially means Middle Way as it was originally the middle path between the island of Funen and Jutland.

So while we figuratively drive (I'm writing this on Tuesday night after we get back but its only fair to make a reader wait for the exciting stuff like we had to...) here's some details on Legoland.

The park consists of multiple sections (or lands):
Legoland Map
March19th was the opening day for the park for the 2016 and season and also opening day for the new Ninjago section.  We stayed in the Legoland Village (bottom left of the map).

The park has been operating since 1968 and is located next to the original Lego Factory and Billund Airport.  Legoland Billund is the original Legoland and the other ones around the world have been based on this one.

The park is split into the following lands:
Miniland: Scale models of famous buildings and towns as well as Star Wars.  There are also a few scenic rides such as the LegoTop, Mini-Boats and Safari.

Duplo Land: This is a young kids play area (for kids 2-6 years old).

Imagination Zone: This consists of a 4D cinema and the Lego Atlantis ride and aquarium.

Legoredo Town: This is the Wild West Area and has a stack of rides of Wild West Themed shops and attractions.

Pirate Land: Pirate themed area with pirate rides and themed buildings.

Adventure Land: Houses the thrill rides and is themed as explorers, ancient Egypt and Aztec.

Polar City: Arctic themed area opened in 2012 hosing a few thrill rides and a penguin display.

Ninjago: New area opened 2016 housing a ninja themed ride and attractions.

The mascot for Legoland is Ollie the Dragon:

The above statue of Ollie is located in the foyer of the Legoland Hotel.

Ok so onto the Legoland part of the trip - Since we have so many photos I think the easiest way to do this is to address it a section at a time - so it won't necessarily be in chronological order over the two days..
