Gold Coast Pt 5 - Mt Tamborine (16-23 Jul)

On Saturday we caught up with our friends and had a break from theme parks to head up to Mount Tamborine.

Mt Tamborine is a plateau in SE Queenland. It named after the aboriginal word for finger limes (Jambreen) and not after the musical instrument.

We started with a trip to the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk - A raised platform walk around the top of the rainforest:

The walk
We had a good walk through the treetops before coming back to the ground and walking to a creek lookout.  Then we headed back a different route and out onto a cantilever viewing platform.  We then finished up at the cafe for coffees and hot chocolates.

When we finished up at the Skywalk, we headed to Curtis Falls to take a walk down the creek to the falls. Curtis Falls is in the Tamborine National Park (Jingeri Jingeri Jambreen):

After the falls we headed down the other walking track, heading down the creek:

After finishing up at the falls we headed into Mt Tamborine town and had a cheese platter for lunch.  We then walked down the main street and visited a traditional cuckoo clock shop, that reminded us of our trip to Austria:

We then headed back to our friends house for dinner.

On the Monday when we left Movie World early due to the queues, we headed back to Mt Tamborine and checked out the Glow Worm Caves.

The caves are an artificial habitat for the glow worms (arachnocampa flava).  The cave was made in 2004.  The cave is sealed with doors to help keep the worms safe, but for this reason the guides collect insects with nets and release them into the cave to feed the worms.

Glow worms hang from the ceiling of the cave and use their glowing lights to trick insects into believing that the lights are stars.  Insects naturally head toward the light and are trapped in sticky silk threads that the glow worms drop from their mouths.  We couldnt take photos in the cave as the light would injure the worms, but we did get to tour the gardens:

Heading into Frog Hollow

We then headed back to Harbour Town to buy a few more things. We ended up Monday evening bu heading out to Montezumas restaurant.  When Kris and I came to Queensland for our honeymoon we stayed in the Aloha hotel.  At the base of the hotel is a Montezumas Aztec/Mexican restaurant.  We decided that we needed to visit again:
