The (almost) forgotton Viking Market (22-July)

With all the excitement of Rome and the USA/Canada trip, I missed an update to the blog.  The weekend after we arrived back from the USA (while we were still jet-lagged) we visited one of the biggest viking markets we've ever been to - at Trelleborg Viking Festival in Denmark.

We'd heard about it in the Ribe festival and were excited to head over and check it out.

The road outside the festival was very narrow and cars were parked down both sides, making it quite an interesting final part of the drive.  At one point there were 6 or 7 cars waiting to go both ways and eventually one of the sides had to back up - when it's 7 cars on a very narrow car-lined road that can be an interesting proposition...

The festival was situated in a viking museum in a huge field:

Tents and stalls
There were lots of people camping at the site, all in period costumes, cooking over open fires or woodworking etc.  There were also plenty of stalls selling the usual viking market merchandise:

There was a battle between two large viking groups, but we hadn't had enough time to see the whole market, so we keep exploring - we did watch everyone heading out though:
